You were made for one reason, and one alone: to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever. But the race of man is fallen—we see the evidences every day. We covet, we lie, we lust, we hate. Sin is not just the exceptionally bad actions done by a few, it’s the sickness of the soul that affects every son of Adam and daughter of Eve born into the world. The serial killer, the successful corporate executive, you, and I all share the same depraved nature. God desires us to return to Him, but He is perfectly holy, and though He is love and doesn’t delight in the death of the wicked, His justice doesn’t permit Him to accept us as we cling to our sin. We all justly deserve hell. The word sin connotes a “falling short of the goal.” Even the best of us fall woefully short, for our chief sin is a failure to fulfill the first and great commandment: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. But in His mercy, God prophesied in times past of a Messiah, who would come to provide a way of salvation, so none would be lost who believe in His substitutionary sacrifice. Two thousand years ago, Jesus, God in human form, stepped into time to change the course of history forever. For your hope. For your joy.
